    Description

This maple banjo resonator was NOT made by Gibson, but was made by Jimmy Cox in the Gibson style to fit typical Mastertone resonator flanges, and it's essentially identical in all dimensions to the classic originals.   Gryphon bought this in 1985, when we were building lots of banjos during the guitar drought, but we never used it and it's been in our attic ever since.  It's made with typical laminated construction, just like the Mastertone resonators of the late '20s and '30s. Outer veneer on the back is curly maple.  It's routed for binding on both edges and the back has recesses for the typical  Gibson Mastertone purfling rings.   Note that the resonator side has no cut-out for the neck heel.  Condition is excellent, it's been sitting in a box on a shelf and hasn't been exposed to sunlight.  While there are other suppliers of Mastertone parts like this today, in the mid-1980s Jimmy Cox was the top guy, or one of them.
